Borderline....We remember and honor
Dear Cal Lutheran Community,
Four years ago, members of our community were impacted by a harrowing event — a mass shooting — at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks.
Borderline was a place where students from Cal Lutheran and other local colleges would gather weekly for the country music dance night. Patrons held lively conversations and made joyful connections in an environment that encouraged them to build relationships, savor life, and enjoy a midweek respite.
On November 7, 2018, however, that celebratory place became a place of violence as a horrific shooting took the lives of twelve members of our community. Today, on the anniversary of that tragic shooting, many of us will want to remember, by name, those whose lives were taken that night:

Living with lament is never easy. Honoring our grief and the fragility of life can guide us along the road to healing and the formation of a beloved community.
At University Chapel this Thursday, we will pray for those whose lives were cut drastically short and for the friends and families who miss, mourn, and memorialize them.

- Spotlight on HSI Week / Enfoque en la Semana de las HSI
September 12, 2024With what I hope to be the hottest days of the academic year behind us — temperature wise — I am excited to share that this week California Lutheran University is celebrating National Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Week. Only 600 institutions in the United States have the honor of engaging in such festivities, and we are proud to be among them.
- Grateful for You
June 13, 2024To say I feel welcomed into this community would be the understatement of my working life. Since my first official day on the job, I have had the privilege of meeting many of you. You have welcomed me with open arms at local church services, a synod assembly, during impromptu conversations along "the spine," and at The Habit for lunch and Starbucks for coffee.
