Byron Swanson

Honorary Alumni

Byron Swanson was honored with the Honorary Alumni Award for his contributions to religion and education and for his service to the University.  Having taught for 28 years, 17 in CLU’s Religion Department, Swanson retired in May 1995.  He was selected by CLU students as Professor of the Year in 1993-1994 and in 1995 received the Faculty Inspiration Award.

As a student at Augustana College, Swanson was president of the Lutheran Student Association and was listed in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.  At Augustana College, Swanson was motivated to become a teacher and share with others the values and experiences that have been so meaningful and inspiring to him.  He said it has been his deep joy to have influenced so many individuals and his abiding hope that their education has made a lasting difference in their journeys.

“Since my very first year at California Lutheran University, I have been inspired by the love, commitment and appreciation that CLU alumni have shown and expressed for their alma mater.  After 17 years on the faculty, I understand why.  What a thrill it is, therefore, to now be an honorary alumnus and to join with other CLU graduates in celebrating the wonderful gifts -- academic, social and spiritual -- that this community has shared with us all.”
