Arnold and Esther Gutierrez
We, Arnold and Esther Gutierrez are the parents of David Gutierrez. We are grateful to CLU for the education he received to launch his career in Organic Chemistry. David graduated from California Lutheran University in 2014. He speaks fondly of Dr. Butcher, Dr. Quinlan, and his Organic Chemistry professor Jason Kingsbury.
David went on to earn his MS degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of San Francisco in 2016 and published five research articles in peer-reviewed organic chemistry journals. He worked as a Research Associate for Gilead Sciences, Inc., as a medicinal chemist synthesizing molecules to inhibit Myeloid Cellular Leukemia. David is now studying in the Ph.D. program in Organic Chemistry at UC Davis.
We wanted to do something to show our appreciation for David’s experience at CLU. When Arnold talked with chemistry faculty, he asked them what they needed most. That answer led our family to establish The Chemistry Faculty Research Fellowship which incentivizes faculty to take on more students as researchers in the Swenson Summer Research Program and undergraduate research during the academic year. We also learned that students need new analytical instruments to conduct their research, so we are sponsoring the acquisition of new instruments to replace some of the obsolete ones.
