Micah Wright received his degrees in clarinet performance from USC (D.M.A.), Rice University (M.M.), and Drake University (B.M.), while also completing performance minors in saxophone (Drake University) and piano (USC). Dr. Wright is an active freelancer in the Los Angeles area, performing in solo, chamber, studio, and orchestral settings. He also maintains a private studio and teaches clinics and masterclasses throughout the Southwest as a clinician for D’Addario Woodwinds.
Micah has received many national and international musical honors throughout his career, most recently earning 2nd Prize at the 2017 Backun International Clarinet Competition, Honorable Mention at the 2017 William C. Byrd International Young Artists Competition, winning the 2016 Frances Walton Competition, and winning the 2016 MTNA California Young Artist Woodwind Competition. Micah has performed as a concerto soloist with several ensembles including Rice University’s Shepherd School Symphony, Drake University’s Symphony Orchestra, the Masterworks Festival Orchestra, the Meyer Chamber Orchestra, the Des Moines Metro Concert Band, and the Orange County Youth Symphony Orchestra.
Currently, Micah is performing with two award-winning ensembles in Los Angeles. The Aristeia Trio is a newly-formed group with Annie-Jacobs-Perkins (cello) and Vijay Venkatesh (piano). Together, they had their radio and concert tour debut in 2016 as winners of the Frances Walton Competition. The Kaleidoscope Trio is an eclectic ensemble with Mann-Wen Lo (violin) and Adam Borecki (guitar) that performs in many musical styles (classical, jazz, pop, klezmer, etc.) for special events throughout the Los Angeles area.
Micah’s main clarinet teachers during his collegiate study were Michele Zukovsky (USC), Yehuda Gilad (USC), Richie Hawley (Rice University), Dr. Michael Webster (Rice University), Clarence Padilla (Drake University), and Joyce Wheeler (Drake University). Micah also studied saxophone with Dr. Jim Romain (Drake University) and piano with Bernadene Blaha (USC), Dr. Ted Reuter, and Dr. Chiu-Ling Lin.
