Week 1 Topic: Conversation Starters and Taboo Conversations

After an explanation of how to play the “American Idiom Game” (where students have a chance to win prizes), students and volunteers will move into a discussion of conversation starters and taboo conversations. How one greets another person and how we start up a conversation can be quite different depending on our culture. This session provides students with an opportunity to share some of their home countries cultural norms when it comes to conversation starters, as well as learn what is/is not appropriate here in the United States.
