Celebrating LGBTQIA+ History Month, 2023

Dear Cal Lutheran Community,

Today is National Coming Out Day and the official start of Cal Lutheran’s celebration of LGBTQIA+ History Month. This commemorative month recognizes the positive impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual people have had and continue to have at the local, national, and international level. This year, the campus observance of LGBTQIA+ History Month includes a pride parade; virtual and in-person lectures; live performances; and activities that feature music, food, and games. These events, as those held by Cal Lutheran during other commemorative months, are open to everyone as we fulfill our commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming place for all who wish to be a part of these celebrations.

LGBTQIA+ History Month events are co-sponsored by the Office of Talent, Culture, and Diversity; Student Life’s Center for Cultural Engagement and Inclusion; CLU PRIDE Club; LGBTQIA+ Faculty and Staff Affinity Group; Counseling and Psychological Services; and Campus Ministry. Student groups and other departments around campus have joined these sponsoring partners in bringing the month’s events to us. There are many ways to get involved in LGBTQIA+ initiatives. Staff and faculty can join the LGBTQIA+ Faculty and Staff Affinity Group and students can join the CLU PRIDE Club by emailing pride@callutheran.edu.

I invite you to join in the activities that mark our affinity months and more. They are just some of the many efforts we are undertaking to build a beautiful and beloved community that fosters belonging. If you have ideas that will advance our movement, please send them to deij@callutheran.edu.

Moving forward together,

Lori E. Varlotta

  • Spotlight on HSI Week / Enfoque en la Semana de las HSI
    September 12, 2024

With what I hope to be the hottest days of the academic year behind us — temperature wise — I am excited to share that this week California Lutheran University is celebrating National Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Week. Only 600 institutions in the United States have the honor of engaging in such festivities, and we are proud to be among them.

  • Grateful for You
    June 13, 2024

To say I feel welcomed into this community would be the understatement of my working life. Since my first official day on the job, I have had the privilege of meeting many of you. You have welcomed me with open arms at local church services, a synod assembly, during impromptu conversations along "the spine," and at The Habit for lunch and Starbucks for coffee.
