Ted Labrenz

Honorary Alumni

Ted Labrenz was honored with the Honorary Alumni Award for his contributions to education and the University.  He taught in CLU’s English Department for 26 years and retired in May 1995.  As a member of the CLU faculty, he participated in numerous committee assignments including the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Regents, the Library and Learning Resources Committee and the Faculty Review Committee.  He chaired the CLU Faculty from 1984 to 1986.

Labrenz was honored with the James D. Phelan Award in Drama for his plays The Grasses Springing and The Lovejoy.  He also received a Lutheran Church in American Creativity grant and a Fulbright Grant to teach a graduate seminar in Modern American Drama at the School of Languages of the National University of Cordoba in Argentina in 1986.  He is the author of many published works and has been featured in Lutheran Education, The Drama Review and The Cresset.  After his retirement, he began working on a novel titled Falling Into Sin and a play titled Insecticide.

“My teaching career began in 1954 and spanned 41 years.  The last 26 of those years were spent at CLU, and I know I enjoyed them, because they went by so fast.  What made them especially pleasant was the opportunity to share the life of the mind with my students.”
