Hein-Fry Lecture Series

Craig L. Nessan, Th.D., Academic Dean and professor of contextual theology at Wartburg Theological Seminary, will present a lecture on Hearing the Word: Lutheran Perspectives on Biblical Interpretation.

This lecture builds upon central Lutheran convictions about the interpretation of Scripture: the Bible is the living Word of God, the finite is the bearer of the infinite, law and Gospel, Christ at the center, and the proper use of reason. Faithful interpretation today must be undertaken in conscientious engagement both with post-modernism and literalism. The interpretation of the Bible has always been and continues to be a contest among rival interpretations. The church is called to confess Jesus Christ as the living Word of God in every generation.

This lecture contributes to a constructive approach to interpreting the Bible as the book of faith in our time. R. Guy Erwin, Ph.D., holder of the Belgum Chair in Lutheran Confessional Theology at CLU, will respond. The free presentation is part of the annual Hein-Fry Lecture Series of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. During the 2009 series, five theologians will present 15 lectures throughout the country.
