Melting Glaciers, Climate-Justice, and the Desperate Need for a New Reformation

Luther Lecture

“Confronted with the reality of melting glaciers, the people who live in close vicinity of the Artic cannot help but to be aware of the fact that things are not as they should be. Something drastic is happening, calling for a radical reformation of the way we think and act in the age of a changing climate. Our hope for the future on this earth depends on it. ” - Rev. Dr. Arnfríður Guðmundsdóttir.

Icelandic Lutheran theologian Rev. Dr. Arnfríður Guðmundsdóttir offers theological reflection on the urgent issue of climate change, the impact of which is already felt around the world. The US Climate Report from November 2018 predicted more devastating wildfires, deadly heat waves and hurricanes to threaten the lives, and economy, of those living on the American soil. Something must be done, now, before it is too late. What do the churches and theologians say, and do? How does the environment’s suffering re-orient our theological emphases and language? How can Martin Luther’s vision of God and theology equip reformers of today - us - to attend to the life-and-death urgencies that are our responsibility?
