Virtual Lecture Series: Women Artists Throughout History

Virtual Lecture Series: Women Artists Throughout History

Women have participated in the production of art in all phases of history. In ancient cultures, there are clear indications and known contributions by women and girls. Starting in the Middle Ages, women artists in the western world became known by name, and many had active careers with patrons in many countries. In Asia, women artists similarly had vital reputations and were known widely, but usually, their reputations remained limited to their national borders.

Beginning in the 18th century, women started having more access to art education, and the numbers of women artists increased. Now, in the 21st century, there are many well-known and accomplished women artists.

This lecture will center on a few figures in history, explain some of the factors that propelled women into becoming artists, and why some succeeded. Presented by Anne Swartz, Ph.D., Professor of Art History, Savannah College of Art and Design.

A link to the Zoom meeting will be made available on the William Rolland website on the day of the lecture.
