Understanding 20th Century Korean History

The film will explore how during the 20th century, China, Japan, Russia and the United States all engaged in efforts to influence the Korean peninsula for political, economic and military predominance and control. Cal Lutheran History professor, David Nelsen, will discuss how Koreans have fought continuously for their independence. To an unusual extent the geography of Korea defined its history. They battled Japanese imperial power from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. Even after World War II ended Korea remained the pawn of larger powers as it tried to establish itself as a nation independent from outside control.

The film premieres online beginning on Saturday, Aug. 29, at the link below (scroll down to Understanding 20th Century Korean History) and will be posted for several months. It is part of a series of One County, One Book program (OCOB) events.
