Changes at Cal Lutheran Campuses Following Removal of State "Stay at Home" Order

Dear Cal Lutheran Community,

As many members of the community are aware, the State of California released “stay at home” restrictions in all California Counties on Monday, January 25.  Ventura County, and the City of Berkeley followed that announcement with aligning restrictions with State guidelines.  Los Angeles County revised restrictions for various industry sectors and placed restrictions beyond State guidelines on higher education including not allowing any in-person activities.

Lifting the stay at home order restores campuses in Thousand Oaks, Oxnard, and Berkeley to “purple tier” allowed activities, and it is important to note that the purple tier is the most restrictive tier and that it indicates that the virus is still “widespread”.  Accordingly, even though on-campus activities will be restored, it is vital that all members of the community follow the guidelines as well as the Cal Lutheran Social Compact.

Details of restored activities follow:

Outdoor Dining – Effective last Tuesday, January 26, outdoor dining was restored at Starbucks and at Ullman Dining.  Tables and chairs are currently arranged to conform to County restrictions, and patrons are asked not to relocate any seating.

Fitness Center – The Forrest Fitness Center will continue to operate outdoors, although between wind damage to the weight area tent and ongoing rain the Forrest Fitness Center is currently closed.

Indoor Study – Indoor study is permitted at the Oxnard Campus; Pearson Library and the Student Union at the Thousand Oaks campus; and at PLTS.

Office Staffing – Starting February 8, 2021, offices on the Thousand Oaks campus are expected to be staffed with between 25% and 50% of workforce personnel.  Each supervisor is expected to develop staffing plans meeting the specific needs of their respective department.  Employees whose job responsibilities must be performed from campus will continue to report to work.

Outdoor Classes – Starting February 16, 2021, outdoor classes will be offered on the Thousand Oaks campus.  Undergraduate faculty and students should see the Provost and Vice President of Student Affairs email of January 28, 2021 posted on the KNOW page for more information.

Starting March 1, 2021, some School of Management graduate classes may also be moved to outdoor classrooms.  Additional information regarding that transition will be provided in February.

All other programs will remain in their current teaching mode.

Indoor Studios and Labs – Also starting February 16, 2021, Faculty will have the option of teaching labs and studio classes indoors.   Undergraduate faculty and students should see the Provost and Vice President of Student Affairs email of January 28, 2021 posted on the KNOW page for more information.

Starting March 1, 2021, some additional School of Management graduate computer labs may also be held indoors.  Additional information regarding that transition will be provided in February.

All other programs will remain in their current teaching mode.

Other Activities – Other permitted activities in respective Counties including athletics practices and meetings, staff and faculty meetings, student activities, and student advising may be held on campus, although they must be held outdoors and attendance is currently limited to no more than 28 attendees.  Those meetings also must be held with masks and with social distancing.  Outdoor classrooms may be used for those activities, although the activities must be scheduled around classroom times.

Please continue to follow the guidance on our KNOW page, and as mentioned above, adhere to the Cal Lutheran Compact. Remember to report COVID-19 symptoms, testing and test results to Covid19reporting@callutheran.edu. Thank you for all you are doing to help protect our community.
