We move forward, together.

Change in Course Delivery Plans

Dear Students,

Higher education institutions had expected to receive instructions for reopening from the state of California by now, but that has not happened. In order to allow students and faculty time to prepare, we have decided to change our plan and at least start the Fall Semester with all virtual classes because that is all that is allowed under current guidelines.

We are still operating under the restrictions imposed by the governor in March that only allow virtual classes. Colleges and universities will not be allowed to resume face-to-face classes until the state reaches Stage 3 of its reopening plan. We are still in Stage 2, and it appears very unlikely that California will enter Stage 3 before September.

If, during the semester/term, higher education is allowed to offer some face-to-face or hybrid classes, we will try to return to the plan that you recently received. We anticipate that shifting in the middle of the semester/term will not be easy, and some classes may choose to stay virtual. We will update you if there are changes. As has always been our plan, students will have the option to complete any class virtually, even if it changes later to be offered in an in-person or “split” format.

Our faculty members have known all summer that it was possible the state would mandate virtual only, so they have been preparing for this. Faculty have been attending trainings and workshops to develop new and creative ways to deliver the same high-quality Cal Lutheran academic experience regardless of the delivery modality. If you have questions about changes to the instructional format, please email

If you no longer want to live on campus because we are beginning the semester in a fully virtual format, please click here to cancel your Fall 2020 housing assignment.

Expect additional updates as we continue to work through all of the details for Fall Semester.

Without question, the Fall Semester will be different than most of us would have liked. But, as Cal Lutheran has done so many times before, we will find opportunities within the challenges. We will find new ways to teach, connect and prepare for lives of purpose. Thank you for all that you contribute to this resilient campus community.
