Research Security

Research Security Training & Resources

Principal Investigators, Co-PIs, and Key Personnel who apply for and/or receive federal funding are required to take Research Security training.

Why Research Security Matters

  • Protects the integrity of U.S. research: Safeguards innovative ideas, data, and technologies that are vital to national interests.

  • Meets federal funding requirements: Federal agencies now require researchers to complete training and to comply with research security standards to maintain eligibility for funding.

  • Prevents foreign interference and misuse: Ensures research outcomes are used responsibly and not exploited for unauthorized purposes.

  • Protects intellectual property and sensitive data: Helps maintain ownership and confidentiality of discoveries and proprietary information.

  • Supports international collaboration responsibly: Encourages transparency and compliance when partnering with foreign researchers or institutions.

  • Upholds institutional and personal reputations: Demonstrates a commitment to ethical research practices and compliance with federal expectations.

  • Enhances national and economic security: Keeps critical research areas—such as emerging technologies, defense, and healthcare—secure from threats.

Research Security Training

Federal agencies are increasing their focus on research security to protect the integrity of the U.S. research enterprise. As part of these efforts, agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) now require Research Security Training for all individuals engaged in federally sponsored research.

This training helps faculty and researchers understand key areas of federal concern, including:

  • Disclosure and transparency requirements related to foreign affiliations, collaborations, and funding;

  • Cybersecurity and data protection practices for safeguarding research data and intellectual property;

  • Export control and research integrity principles that ensure compliance with federal and institutional policies.

Completion of Research Security Training is required within the 12 months preceding an application for federal research funding. The training must be renewed annually as recommended by federal agencies.
