(De)Normalizing Classroom Literature: Understanding Text Types for an Anti-Racist Classroom

"Celebrate All Voices" CRLP at Cal Lutheran Webinar Series

(De)Normalizing Classroom Literature: Understanding Text Types for an Anti-Racist Classroom

The California Reading and Literature Project at California Lutheran University would like to invite participants to join guest speaker Shervaughnna Anderson-Byrd as she discusses the three pillars of children's literature.

This session will focus on how to select texts that validate, affirm, empower and provide action for students to implement social justice behaviors. There will be a thorough discussion of the characteristics and examples of books/texts that are culturally responsive, multicultural and support social-justice actions for students.

Anderson-Byrd is the current site director at UCLA for the California Reading and Literature Project, Project SOL (Social Justice) and the Parent Empowerment Project. She has been an active member of CRLP for over 20 years.

Prior to coming to UCLA, she was a K-12 consultant at the Los Angeles County Office of Education where she provided ELA and technical support to districts throughout the county. She began her teaching career overseas and eventually returned to the states as a bilingual teacher. She has contributed to her field in many roles as a site and district administrator, curriculum coach, content expert and her favorite of all time, classroom teacher.
