Final Exam Flexibility for Students Traveling to India: The Indian government just released the flight plan update to bring citizens from India back home on Air India non-scheduled flights. We have 27 Cal Lutheran students from India who may be returning home on these flights. Initial reports indicated that the US flights would be later in May/early June, but the announced flight schedule is now May 9-15, during our final exam week. The Office of International Students and Scholars has advised any student planning to leave to immediately connect with their faculty to identify arrangements regarding their finals, if impacted. Not only will flights be an issue, but there will also be a 14-day required quarantine and students may have difficulty accessing the internet upon their return. All faculty are requested to continue to provide as much flexibility as possible for students navigating challenges during this difficult time.

Summer Faculty Research: Many of our full time faculty make use of time in the summer to focus on their scholarship and creative works. As we face the issues with COVID-19 and continue to make plans for the summer, we’d like to get an idea of which faculty members would like to be on campus to work on research or creative work. If you need to be in a lab, a studio, or have other reasons you would like to be on campus during the summer, please send an email to Grady Hanrahan at ghanraha@callutheran.edu with information about where and when you would like to be on campus so we can address your needs.

Digital Learning Webinars on VidGrid: In response to several faculty requesting VidGrid in order to start recording their lectures, the Digital Learning team has put together several training sessions. Click here to see session dates/times and to RSVP. This training will go over recommended preparations for the transition from Panopto to VidGrid, recording with VidGrid, and making videos available in Blackboard. Note: All schools except the Graduate School of Psychology will be moving away from Panopto to VidGrid at the end of the semester. Existing content will be moved from Panopto to VidGrid.

Reminder: Cal Lutheran Travel Restrictions: At the moment all away travel is restricted for university personnel. Until Cal Lutheran lifts the travel freeze, university funds cannot be applied for any faculty/staff travel: international or domestic. The following considerations need to be kept in mind:
  • The university has placed a freeze on all university-related travel as of March 2020.
  • The Business Office is not processing reimbursement/advancement for travel as it is presently restricted.
  • The university’s international insurance policy (EIIA/EuropAssist) is not in effect for non-authorized university international travel.
  • If the university releases its freeze on travel, the ability to travel to an international location is still dependent upon certain factors and requires vetting through the Center for Global Engagement (CGE):
    • What is the country’s DOS / CDC / WHO rating?
    • Is the city’s warning level different from the country warning level?
    • Is the university’s international insurance provider (EIIA/EuropAssist) providing coverage in the destination?
Any faculty/staff planning on business international travel should submit their information to the linked California Lutheran Faculty/Staff Travel Registry Form so the CGE can provide guidance and notify individuals if restrictions are lifted. Please contact CGE at global@callutheran.edu with any questions about the travel freeze and/or the Travel Registry.

Announcements

  • Committee Information Requested by May 22: The Committee on Committees is requesting that all annually-contracted faculty complete the form below regarding your current committee responsibilities as well as those already assigned for the next academic year (Fall 2020/Spring 2021). In order to monitor service workloads and ensure a more equitable distribution of committee work across campus it is vital that the Committee on Committees has an accurate and complete picture of faculty service obligations.  This form will provide the data the Committee on Committees uses as a basis for requests to serve on committees for the upcoming academic year and for reports on committee service equity, so please be thorough in your responses.  If a faculty member does not submit a response it could have an impact on the accuracy of their recognized committee service responsibilities. The Committee on Committees thanks you for your time and participation.

A special “thank you” to the 56 contributors---largely Cal Lu faculty!—who made this support possible. We already have more student petitions than we can address from our fund raising efforts.
