Visual Elements
Rules
Note: For handheld communications, the standard weight for the rules is 2 pt. The size
of the rule may scale in proportion to the size of the piece it appears on.
Note: The arched rule may never be used upside down.
Rules are a great way to add emphasis to a key word or phrase, to lead a viewer’s
eye through the hierarchy of a page, or to establish a page border.
The standard rule evokes the logo, reinforcing the continuity of visual style. The
arched rule represents the mid-century architecture on campus and helps to subtly
add a sense of place.
Boxes
Boxes can help categorize, organize and compartmentalize pieces of information. They also easily introduce the broader color palette into materials and are great for holding small blocks of text.
Icons
Icons will be made available for special-use scenarios. Please contact Marketing & Communications for more information.
Crops
When not using full bleed, cropping photos is a great way to add visual interest to
a piece without adding clutter. There are two easy ways to do this: cropping an image
into a circle, or cropping an image into a body of text. The latter also elegantly
marries the verbal with the visual.
Note: Circle crops can themselves be cropped or can bleed off a page.
