Fifty and Better Lecture Series

The World of Neuroscience: From Single Neurons to Human Behaviors with Wesley Tierney

Neuroscience, or the study of the nervous system, is a broad and complex field ranging from individual neurons to complex behaviors. This lecture will expose students to interesting aspects and findings from the research world of neuroscience. We will cover the molecular mechanisms of neuron survival and function; "basic" behaviors such as movement, hearing, and sight; and some higher-order actions, such as learning and memory. Throughout the lecture, we also will share highlights of big scientific advancements within neuroscience and some modern laboratory methods used to answer questions we have about the brain.

Wesley Tierney received his bachelor's degree in psychology from California Lutheran University and his master's degree in biology from California State University Northridge. Tierney is currently a PhD student in neuroscience at Arizona State University. His current research is on the mechanisms of herpes simplex virus infection of neurons. He has worked for seven years in various research labs including psychology/behavior research, entomology, regenerative medicine and virology.

The Fifty and Better program was designed to offer university-level courses (no tests, no homework) taught by experts in the field, and to host social engagement activities for individuals age 50 and older. When COVID-19 erupted and the first-ever offering of in-person courses had to be postponed indefinitely, we responded by moving the courses to a virtual environment using Zoom.

Cost for the two-hour lecture is $8. Registration is required by 3 p.m. March 22.
