About the Speaker

Homero Magaña was born in Michoacán, Mexico, and immigrated to the U.S. when he was 12 with his family of seven, speaking no English. He picked citrus and worked landscaping for seven years seasonally with his father. Magaña graduated from Fillmore High School, Moorpark Community College, UC Berkeley and San Diego State University, where he earned his master's and credential in school counseling. He also received a second master’s degree and administrative credential from CSU Northridge.

In 2014, he shared his student success stories at the White House and was asked to introduce First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House College Opportunity Summit. He has been a keynote speaker and presenter to thousands of people at local, state and national conferences.

During the 2016 Hispanic Heritage Month, Nissan created a video about his journey under the message "Hispanics Who Dominate."
