Lantern Festival

Lunar New Year 2022

Lantern Festival

2022 is a Year of the Tiger, starting Feb. 1 and ending Jan. 21, 2023. The Tiger is known as the king of all beasts in China. The zodiac sign Tiger is a symbol of strength, braveness and exorcising evils. Many Chinese children wear hats or shoes with a tiger image for good luck (source). Learn more about the legend of the Tiger.

The 15th day of the New Year is the Lantern Festival (元宵节 Yuánxiāo Jié /ywen-sshyaou jyeah/). It is the traditional end of Spring Festival celebrations. Some people send glowing lanterns into the sky, while others release floating lanterns onto the sea, onto rivers or adrift in lakes.

Come to the Student Union Lobby and enjoy some Lantern Festival activities such as calligraphy, release of wishes, lantern building, food, dominoes, dances and more!
