Undergraduate Scholarships & Grants

In addition to the Federal and State grants available for qualifying students, Cal Lutheran offers many kinds of scholarships and grants. These gifts are made possible through the kindness of donors to the University.

Academic Scholarship (Freshmen)

Automatic Consideration - Incoming freshmen students are reviewed and awarded based on their academic records including grades and standardized testing. Academic Scholarships are renewable for subsequent years.

Academic Scholarship (Transfers)

Automatic Consideration - Academic Scholarships for transfer students are based on a combination of college GPA and the number of transferable credits. Academic scholarships are renewable for subsequent years.

Phi Theta Kappa: Transfer students who are current members of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honors Society at their Community College will be considered for the highest transfer academic scholarship. Please note, you must submit official documentation showing you are currently a member of PTK.

Fast Track Grant

Application Required - Cal Lutheran is offering up to $5,000 per academic year (up to $1250 per term) to qualified students in the Bachelor's Degree for Professionals program. It's easy to find out if you're qualified.

Presidential Scholarship

Automatic Consideration - Presidential Scholarships recognize and reward graduating high school seniors in the top tier of our applicant pool who embody the University’s educational and leadership goals. Students who come to campus for Honors Day will interview for the top scholarships offered by the University.

Students must meet the Early Action Application Deadline (November 1) to be considered for the Presidential Scholarships. The scholarships awarded through this program will replace any academic scholarship the student received at the time of admission. Presidential scholarships are renewable for subsequent years.

Public Price Promise

Automatic Consideration - Have you been admitted to UCLA, UCSB, UC Davis, UC Berkeley, UCSD or UC Irvine. Then you're eligible to attend Cal Lutheran for the same average cost of attendance as these universities. Learn more

Global Scholars Program

Automatic Consideration -These scholarships are available for incoming students from each of the following regions: Asia, Africa and the Middle East, Europe, and Latin America. The Global scholarships are renewable for subsequent years of enrollment. Up to $30,000 is awarded to freshmen and up to $25,000 to transfers.

Freshmen must meet the Early Action Application Deadline (November 1) and Transfers must meet the Priority Application Deadline (March 15) to be considered. The scholarships awarded through this program will replace any academic scholarship the student received at the time of admission.

Alumni Scholarship

Automatic Consideration - If you are the child or grandchild of a Cal Lutheran graduate, then you're eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship per academic year of enrollment at Cal Lutheran.


Norway America Association (NorAm) Scholarship

Automatic Consideration - Cal Lutheran offers scholarships to students who apply through the Norway America Association (NorAm). The scholarship amount remains the same for all years of attendance at Cal Lutheran.

Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Scholarship

Application Required - Incoming freshman and transfer applicants with superior creative-talent in the areas of Music, Theatre Arts, or Visual Art can apply and audition for a VAPA Scholarship prior to enrolling at Cal Lutheran.

Congregational Partners in Education (CPE) Award

Application Required - This renewable award allows congregations of any faith to assist outstanding students who have demonstrated a commitment to the life and work of their church. Cal Lutheran will match gifts from the congregation in support of a student enrolled full-time up to $2,500 per academic year.

Convocators Scholarship

Application Required - Scholarships awarded to first-year incoming Lutheran students who are nominated by Cal Lutheran Convocators and demonstrate the principles of Cal Lutheran's mission, thereby exhibiting confidence in their identity and vocation.

Cal Grants

Application Required - This state grant is for California residents only and is based on financial need as determined by the FAFSA. The amount provided varies based on the institution the student attends and which grant he or she is awarded. To be considered, students must file their FAFSA and submit a completed GPA Verification Form no later than March 2. University Grant

Application Required - The University Grant (formerly known as CLU Grant) is available to full-time undergraduate students and eligibility and amount is based on Financial Need as determined annually by completion of the FAFSA. The University Grant is a need-based grant and subject to adjustments based on the cost of attendance, EFC (Expected Family Contribution) and/or other federal, state or institutional assistance.

Occasionally University Grants may be replaced by endowed scholarship funds made possible through the donations from generous benefactors to Cal Lutheran. These types of changes will not affect the total financial aid package.

Application Required - International Grants are awarded to International Students based on demonstrated Financial Need as determined by completion of the International Financial Aid Application. If a student is awarded an International Grant, the amount remains the same for all years of attendance at Cal Lutheran. The grant amount does not increase or decrease. Access Grant

Application Required - Access Grants are awarded to AB 540 students and eligibility and amount are determined by completion of the California Dream Application. There are limited grants available. If awarded a grant, the amount remains the same for all years of attendance at Cal Lutheran. The grant amount does not increase or decrease.

$500 - $2,500

Purpose Grant

Automatic Consideration - The Purpose Grant is awarded to incoming first year students who have been conditionally admitted to California Lutheran University. Full participation in the academic support program known as STAR (Students Taking Academic Responsibility) is a requirement for the first academic year.

Students with the Purpose Grant may apply the funds exclusively to summer courses at California Lutheran University. Courses must be used toward graduation requirements of the student's chosen program of study. The grant may be accessed after the student has successfully completed their first year at Cal Lutheran and may be applied to any summer term of their choosing throughout their undergraduate studies. Purpose Grant funds will be fully applied to summer tuition charges until the award is depleted.

Any tuition charges not covered by the Purpose Grant will be the responsibility of the student. Recipients must remain in good academic standing, and comply with all STAR Program and financial aid requirements to remain eligible to use the funds.

To activate the award, students must complete a "Purpose Grant Request" form with the Financial Aid Office at time of summer term registration. A representative from Financial Aid and Academic Services will verify student enrollment and eligibility. The award cannot be transferred or applied to other institutional charges.

Up to $5,000

Any combination of Cal Lutheran scholarships, grants, and awards may not exceed the amount of tuition. All students must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards in order to be eligible for institutional aid. Undergraduate students must be registered full-time and meet Institutional Academic Eligibility (IAE) standards in order to be eligible for institutional aid.
