Spotlight

• Thousand Oaks Campus Fire Drills: Fire drills are scheduled between 8am-5pm on Tues., Oct. 4 and Wed., Oct. 5. We will avoid the science buildings on Tuesday since we know that many of our labs are scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We will not announce the exact time for each building. You should avoid exams on these days so they are not interrupted. Do not cancel classes these days! We need to practice getting students out of the classroom in the event of a fire.

• The Learning Management System (LMS) Taskforce requested proposals from three vendors and invited representatives to present their products to the campus community. • University Chapel, Thurs., Oct. 6, 11:25am, Samuelson Chapel. Cal Lutheran's Mariachi Ensemble, led by Rocio Marron, will perform. This service will be held in memory of Carmen Ramirez, Ventura County’s first Latina supervisor, who passed away on Aug. 12, 2022.
   
• Adjunct Faculty Council Meeting - Thurs., Oct. 6, 4-5pm on Zoom (link). All adjunct faculty are welcome to attend. • Provost Forum: Provost Neilson will review the proposed faculty handbook changes with faculty at the Provost Forum on the date below. Announcements

• Winter 2023 Faculty Retreat: The Faculty Community Committee encourages Faculty to host breakout sessions Tues., Jan. 17 in Soiland Arena at our Winter 2023 Faculty Retreat. Based on Fall retreat feedback we invite you to pitch pedagogy, curriculum, or teaching & learning centered topics integrating HSI curricular responsivity. We suggest proposed pre-planned brief and casual breakout conversations with colleagues be about 30 minutes, as a complement to a traditional keynote. Prior retreat breakout sessions have included: yoga pedagogy, outdoor experiential learning, conflict management in the classroom, recruiting students in STEM, universal design, the flipped classroom, and navigating religious differences in the classroom. FCC is accepting individual and co-led submissions, so please feel free to grab a like-minded colleague and send us your ideas. The FCC will begin reviewing submitted ideas on Fri., Oct. 7. To suggest a breakout session, please submit your name, department, and potential topic or theme to Diane Rodriguez-Kiino at dcrodrig@callutheran.edu
   
• Looking for a one-of-a-kind teaching opportunity- The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program. Are you interested in teaching your students alongside justice-impacted students/inmates inside a jail/prison or on probation? Are you looking to teach a skill base workshop in a correctional facility to justice-impacted individuals? Cal Lutheran's Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program allows faculty to develop a unique immersion experiential learning opportunity course for students in your majors and those who are justice-impacted. Also, “Pathway 101” workshops are offered at a jail by Cal Lutheran faculty to aid inmates as they prepare to reintegrate back into society. To learn more about teaching a course, the training needs, or to teach workshops for students alongside incarcerated learners through the Cal Lutheran Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program, contact Schannae Lucas at sllucas@callutheran.edu. • OURCS Information Session: Calling all Junior Faculty! Thurs., Oct. 20, 2:40-3:40 in Ullman 100/101 in collaboration with the CTL and LaVerne Seales our Junior Faculty Senator; Andrea Sell presents information on The Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship (OURCS). The OURCS strives to facilitate a campus culture in which mentored undergraduate research and creative scholarship can thrive and to provide programs and activities that support and celebrate scholarly activities by students across all disciplines. This session will cover undergraduate research funding opportunities, common mentorship questions, and ways to get involved. • Academic Difficulty Notices for Traditional Undergraduates: The official reporting period for the Fall 2022 Academic Difficulty Notices (ADNs) is in-progress. Please submit any unsatisfactory grades for your students who are earning a C- or below through WebAdvisor or Self-Service by Fri., Oct. 21. Only one midterm grade submission per student in a particular class is requested for the semester. Academic Services will reach out to these students through Nov. 2 to offer support. Keep in mind that the last day to withdraw with a "W" is Friday, Nov. 4. If you have any questions, contact Erashel Vaiz via email evaiz@callutheran.edu or phone x3258. The CTL via the New American Colleges & Universities Consortium (NACU) is sharing a new four-part series with an experienced health and wellness coach, Charles Inniss, DPT, NBC-HWC. • Fall 2023 Cal Lu – Oxford Program Student Application Open: Due Nov. 1: Please inform your students that the applications are open for the Cal Lu-Oxford Program. Traditionally 8 – 10 students are selected from various majors (e.g., biology, music, philosophy, et.) to attend tutorials at the University of Oxford. Students spend 4 weeks in a 1:1 (up to 1:3) faculty-to-student class from mid-August to late-September. Following the tutorials, the students participate in the CIEE London Study Center Block II program for additional classes and/or an internship experience between late September to late November. Student preparation sessions begin in spring/summer 2023. Contact oea@callutheran.edu with questions. 
   
• International Education Week: Call for Programs (Nov. 14-18). Faculty and staff are invited to submit existing or new internationally-focused programs (e.g., lecture, presentation, panel discussion, film screening, etc.) for inclusion in the International Education Week Celebration. IEW celebrates the benefits of global education and exchanges worldwide. If you would like to propose a program or be featured in IEW programming please email global@callutheran.edu by Mon., Oct. 24 for inclusion in our publicity and program outreach. Limited support funding available.
