A favorite spot among surfers in Ventura County, Emma Wood State Beach in Ventura has quite reliable surf. Summer offers the favored conditions for surfing. Waves are modest and clean throughout the year, making this a decent beach for beginners to learn to surf. In the winter months, particularly January, large swell makes for hefty offshore, reef-breaking waves that are sure to excite experienced surfers.

Surfers Point at Seaside Park

Location: Shoreline Dr, Ventura, CA 93001

Distance from campus: 29 miles

Also known as Ventura Point, this beach is a rather exposed reef and point break beach that has very reliable surf year-round and contains several take-off zones. This beach is often crowded, so head out early!

Silver Strad Beach

Silver Strand Beach

Location: 2525 Ocean Drive, Oxnard, CA, 93035

Distance from campus: 28 miles

Silver Strand Beach in Oxnard stretches between the Channel Islands Harbor and Port Hueneme Harbor. This beach is rather exposed and provides beach breaking waves. Ample parking is available along Ocean Drive. To the north of the harbor entrance, nearby Hollywood Beach can often provide larger and cleaner waves for more experienced surfers.

County Line

County Line Beach

Location: 42398 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265

Distance from campus: 29 miles

Located inside Leo Carrillo State Park, County Line Beach rests--you guessed it--on the border of Ventura and Los Angeles counties. County Line is a great beach for beginning surfers, offering lots of space for you to learn. Do some exploration on foot to find one of several charming beach caves. Parking is limited to a small lot and shoulder parking along the PCH.
