Paula L. Woods on the Mystery Genre
The Rise of the Ethnic Detective
Paula L. Woods is the author of the acclaimed Charlotte Justice mystery series, including Strange Bedfellows (2006) which Publisher's Weekly calls "searing" and lauds for its "rich portrait of LAPD politics and of the African-American community."
The previous books in the series, Dirty Laundry (2003), Stormy Weather (2001), and Inner City Blues (1999) have won numerous awards and appeared on the Los Angeles Times bestseller list. Inner City Blues received the Macavity Award for Best First Mystery and was named Best First Novel by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association.
Paula Woods is a member of the National Book Critics Circle and regularly reviews books for the Los Angeles Times.
