Wisdom of Men Panel Discussion
Since the beginning of time, men and women have relied upon mentors, teachers, coaches, parents, and others for knowledge and inspiration. This is your chance to seek wisdom from a variety of inspiring people in one place. This event is the latest in a series that has included the Philosophy of Becoming a Man class and forums on Men and Sports; Drugs, Alcohol and Masculinity; and Becoming a Man.
This year, we are honored to have an exceptional speaker lineup that includes prominent figures from the area: Gregory Sawyer, Vice President for Student Affairs at CSU Channel Islands; William Bersley, professor of philosophy at CLU; football coach Foxx Jantz; educators Michael DeMartini and David Doyle; and former Ventura County CEO Johnny Johnston.
Since his arrival at CSUCI, Sawyer has dedicated his time to the development of a student-centered team that fosters a collegial and educational environment for all students. Bersley, Chair of CLU's Philosophy Department, is known for his ability to teach, help and motivate students. He was instrumental in introducing the Philosophy of Becoming a Man course that has transformed the lives of many students. Jantz, a mentor, guru and spiritual advisor, is an inspiration to the athletes he coaches.
DeMartini has helped change people's for more than 30 years as a teacher. He has taught at Crespi Carmelite High School, CLU and Central City School for Values, a charter school in downtown Los Angeles established by fellow panelist Doyle. The school that helps low income, first generation students achieve success in high school and college is just one of the schools that has benefited from Doyle's leadership and guidance. One of the area's most prominent leaders, Johnston retired as CEO of Ventura County in March. Under his leadership, the county became one of the most prestigious and well run in the nation.
The conversation will be moderated by Chris Kajtor, a CLU alumnus and graduate assistant in the Office of Residence Life. Dedicated to helping men and women at CLU reach their potentials, Kajtor has worked to change the way issues of manhood are addressed at CLU and has helped to teach young men the responsibilities and joys of becoming mature males. Please join us for an inspiring evening of wisdom, compassion and learning.
Wisdom of the wise, experience of the ages, may be preserved by sharing. -Isaac D'Israeli
